Austrian Association
of East Asian Studies



The Austrian Association of East Asian Studies (AAEAS) is a non-profit academic organisation devoted to the study of current political, social and economic trends in China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia. The association also encourages comparative social research between East Asia and other parts of the continent. AAEAS was founded in 2001 by a group of researchers from several Austrian universities in cooperation with leading scholars from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

Christian Schafferer


is a founding member of the association and its current chairperson. He is Associate Professor of International Trade at Overseas Chinese University (Taiwan). He has lived and worked in Taiwan, South Korea, Mongolia, Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam for over ten years. His research interests embrace Asian politics, society and economy.

Pamela Kargl


is a founding member of the association. She was a graduate student at the Department of Sociology, National Taiwan University. Her research deals with Taiwan's educational system, societal changes in East Asia and cultural studies.

Johannes Miesenböck 


joined the association in 2009. Mr. Miesenböck is the First Treasurer. During the last years, he has obtained a great deal of cross-cultural experience. His research deals with economic developments and business relations in East Asian societies.

Istvan Rado


joined the association in 2006. He is the current academic program co-ordinator. Mr. Rado has been involved in several research projects on Southeast Asian politics and economy. He has been a visiting scholar at the Department of Political Science, Thammasat University (Thailand).

Birgit Dolzer


joined the association in 2007. Ms Dolzer has been a graduate student in Malaysia and her expertise lies within the area of Southeast Asian society and culture.

joined the association in 2006. Mr. Pol is the Second Secretary and also in charge of public relations. He is an expert on Thai and Cambodian society.
